Beyond the Resolutions
Over the years, we’ve been conditioned to think about the New Year as a time for resolutions, a list of things to "do" or "stop doing." But there is a reason most resolutions fail by mid-January: they are external goals without an internal engine.
In my coaching sessions, we often talk about Drivers and Drainers. Most resolutions quickly become "Drainers." They feel like chores. They sap energy, and are easily discarded the moment life gets challenging because they aren't connected to our core intent. This year, I’m encouraging a shift in perspective. Instead of a list of rules, find your Driver.
The Power of a Single Driver
A Driver isn't a to-do list; it’s a filter. It is the one word that guides every decision you make, whether personal or professional. While a resolution is something you try to keep, a Driver is something that keeps you. It’s what you lean into when the chips are down and you need to plough through the noise.
My Driver for 2026 is BREAKTHROUGH.
For me, this means looking at every project and asking: "Is this just maintenance, or does it lead to a breakthrough?" If it’s just "more of the same," it’s a distraction. This word is my filter. It ensures my energy is going toward real progress, not just staying busy.
What is driving you?
I’ve been asking my clients what their word is for the year ahead. The responses have been powerful because they are so specific to what they want to achieve:
- Space: For the business owner who wants to start thinking strategically and stop reacting.
- Accountability: For the professional who is ready for ownership and done with excuses.
- Boundaries: For those looking to protect time and energy to reach their next level.
When you have a Driver, you don’t need a resolution. You don’t need to "try" to be better; you simply have a filter that tells you exactly which way to move.
I’ve claimed mine. Now, I want to hear yours. What is the one word you can anchor into for 2026?
